History Group

www.thurgolandhistory.co.uk

The Thurgoland History Group was founded in 2004 to provide an opportunity for local people to find out more about the history of the local area and to share their knowledge with others. The group holds monthly meetings in the Village Hall during the winter months usually on a Thursday evening but do check with the Programme because we sometimes change it - just to confuse you. The meeting usually includes a lecture by a local speaker. During the summer months we meet at the Village Hall and then visit some historic place locally. Occasionally we meet with another history group in a neighbouring area to share our knowledge.

We do not charge a subscription but from January 2012 to cover costs at each meeting the admission charge is £2 per meeting to cover the cost of hiring the Villlage Hall and paying our speaker's expenses.

In 2008 the Group was successful in gaining a heritage lottery grant of £38,500 and a grant of £2000 from the Parish Council to fund a five sectional heritage project as follows.

Produce a book- Thurgoland in Times Past - with photographs and text to record the history of the village.

Create a DVD containing 455 photographs taken from glass negative plates and other loaned photographs.

Produce a Heritage Trail which is a circular route taking in most of Thurgoland’s heritage sites.

Create a Website (no longer online)

Restore and make safe the footway of the village pump on Halifax Rd near the Cross Roads.

Copies of the book and the DVD can be obtained from Maurice Williams for the book and DVD and now are £2.50 each. Post and packing in the UK is £3 for both.
