The Choir’s Background and Aims

Thurgoland Community Choir was formed in August 2012 and is open to members of Thurgoland Parish and surrounding District. It was facilitated as a community venture by the Holy Trinity Thurgoland’s Community Action Group (‘the CAG’) which has a remit from the parish church to engage with the local community in new and different ways.

The choir is a community and not a religious venture. It expects to embrace a wide range of secular, popular and spiritual music. Its primary aim is to bring members of the local community together to enjoy singing in a social and friendly environment.

The CAG funded the choir for the first 6 months but it is now self-funded. The choir is run by a management committee of volunteers. A copy of the constitution is available on request.

The choir invites enthusiastic singers of all ages with no special musical expertise required.

The choir meets for rehearsals every Wednesday evening from 7.30 to 9.30 with a short refreshment break included.

Due to our recent increase in numbers we have recently moved our rehearsal venue from Holy Trinity Church, in Thurgoland, to Crane Moor Methodist Chapel, Crane Moor Road, Crane Moor, S35 7AT.

Victoria Heyes was our inspiration and led us from the choir’s conception. Her career as a Doctor unfortunately saw her move from the local area.

In 2015 we welcomed Dan Timmins, a professional musician from Stocksbridge. He has built on Victoria's success and brought his own new brand of enthusiasm into the choir.

The choir has successfully presented two concerts in Holy Trinity Church, Thurgoland . We have joined in several community events such as an Old Time Music Hall in the Village Hall, and have enjoyed performing over the Christmas period at various locations such as the local Lunch Club, Library, Nursing Home and local public hostelries. In 2015 we travelled to the picturesque village of Howarth to perform in “A Victorian Christmas”. We hope to make this a regular event.
